Old growth presents a risk for silage quality

Clear overgrown grassland now

Many grassland areas could not be harvested last autumn due to persistent wet weather conditions. It is now essential to remove the resulting old growth because it can have disastrous consequences if left in place. Remaining old growth suppresses and suffocates the young sward before it is able to establish in spring. Old growth additionally presents a major risk of fermentation pests, which would then substantially impair the quality of the first cut.

If at all possible, old growth should be removed now, before the new vegetation starts. This can be done with a harvester combination that swathes old material, for example. The harvested organic matter can then be disposed of for arable farming purposes, using a trailer. It is essential to reseed grassland after this step.

Grassland quality should also be taken into account when selecting the appropriate BONSILAGE silage additive. Consult the Product Finder or use the contact form.
